Racketball at HSRC
Racketball is in its infancy at the club, and we're very keen to see it grow.
There's a racketball mix-in on Wednesday mornings and it's starting to take over at the Friday evening mix-in as well - please come along & give it a try.
Some racketball is also played at the Sunday mix-in. Some of our squash players only play racketball now due to injury. Its a much easier game than squash to play. It keeps you fit but is not as hard on your knees!
Thanks to a grant from Awards for All we now have several qualified Racketball coaches in the club who can help you get started. But it is such an easy game to play that you don't need a lot of instruction to get going and anyone at the mix-ins will help you. We can provide balls and rackets if you don't have your own.
If you are not a member of the club you can still come along to the Friday or Sunday mixins on THREE occasions for free. This lets you explore the club before making any decision about joining. We're a friendly bunch though so hopefully you will join us!

Racketball Tournaments
The Double Trouble Racketball Tournament on Friday 29th February was a great success. Eighteen members - including three new members and that Sunday night star Paul Hammond - turned out for an evening of fun which mixed Racketball Doubles with some Singles matches. Players were split into two teams of roughly equivalent ability. Interesting one team led by Paul B, fresh from adventures in Australia and New Zealand, were the overall winners of the Doubles while the other, led by Tim M won the Singles! Some wonderful calculations - worthy of Stephen Hawkings himself - led to Paul B's team being declared the overall winners. Prizes - that most wonderful of delicacies a Cadbury's Easter Egg - were presented to each of the winning team in the bar. The loosing team quietly drowned their sorrows and tucked in to the great filled rolls generously provided by Maggs & Co. Many thanks Maggs and thanks to all for participating.

Previously... The first tournament of the 2007-08 season got underway on Friday 21st September with the Rabble team playing the Rousers. Unfortunately for the Rousers, the Rabble team led by John Williams were in sterling form and the poor old Rousers, despite the presence of Sean Holgate, fell to a 40-20 crushing defeat. Desperately the Rousers retired to the bar to drown their sorrows only to have their despair made worse when the Rabble's rooky player David O'Keefe won the draw for the prize of the evening, a brand new Ektelon Racket!! Thanks to Awards for All for their support of this tournament.

More tournaments to follow at roughly 6 week intervals ...

Racketball Coaching  The taster Racketball coaching sessions on the 19th September had some 'veteren players' take to the court in the morning session. Ken Wilson clearly demonstrated his sporting skills. He rapidly adapted his stroke to hit down on the ball. The ball flew low and hard around the court clinging to the walls. Very impressive!! Clare and Betty showed that drop shots ARE possible, even at Racketball. The evening session had another veteran player on court and two new members, welcome to Eileen and Charlotte! Charlotte showed that all her squash lessons with Jamie have not gone to waste by rapidly adapting her game to racketball while mum, Eileen, quickly demonstrated how easy it is to learn Racketball. Much easier than squash!! Thanks to Awards for All for their support of these coaching sessions.
